Privacy Policy

This policy explains what information the Transsera app uses, why, where it is sent and how you can control it. Short version: we don't run user accounts, your Coursera session stays on your device, and analytics can be turned off.

Last updated: October 22, 2026

About this policy

Transsera (“Transsera”, “we”, “us”) is an independent, specialized browser for accessing your Coursera courses on iPhone and iPad, with a built-in video player and subtitle translation. It is developed by an individual developer and is not affiliated with Coursera Inc.

This policy describes data handling in the Transsera app and on this website. For the conditions of using the app, see our Terms of Use.

Your Coursera account

Transsera does not have its own accounts. You sign in to Coursera on Coursera's own sign-in page, shown inside the app in a web view. Coursera, and the sign-in provider you choose on that page, process your credentials under their own policies.

  • After you sign in, the app keeps the Coursera session cookies and your Coursera user identifier on your device: in the app's web view data, in the system cookie storage used by the app, and as a backup copy in the iOS Keychain. This lets the app stay signed in between launches.
  • The app does not read or store your password. If you use the optional Browser session sign-in option, the session value you paste is checked with Coursera and stored on your device in the same way.
  • The app talks to Coursera directly to load your courses, videos, subtitles, assignments and progress, and to report lectures you've finished. This information is exchanged between your device and Coursera only. We never receive your Coursera session, profile or course data.

Signing out (Options → Logout) deletes the Coursera session, cookies and coursera.org website data from the app, along with the Keychain copy of the session. Cached courses, playback history and downloaded lectures may remain on your device after sign-out. The app also keeps the identifier of the last account so it can tell whether the next sign-in is the same person. When a different account signs in, the previous account's cached courses, playback history and downloaded lectures are deleted.

Data stored on your device

To work fast and offline, the app stores on your device:

  • a cache of your course structure (weeks, lectures and materials);
  • lectures and subtitles you download, in the app's Documents folder (also reachable through Finder file sharing when your device is connected to a Mac);
  • your playback positions and recently watched lectures;
  • preferences such as playback speed, subtitle size, appearance and chosen translator;
  • records of your in-app purchases, in the Keychain.

This data is not sent to us. You can remove downloaded lectures in the app. Deleting the app removes its local files, including cached courses and playback history. Signing out removes your Coursera session, but does not clear all local data. Items in the Keychain may survive deleting the app, as with any iOS app. Your device backups, if enabled, follow Apple's iCloud or computer backup settings.

Subtitle translation

When you tap a word or select a phrase to translate, the app sends only the selected text and the source and target languages to our translation service. The service runs on Google Cloud and forwards the request to the translator you've chosen: Google Translate or Yandex Translate. The app also loads the list of available languages from the same service.

  • Requests contain no Coursera cookies, no account details and no identifier of you or your device.
  • We don't log or store the text you translate. The translation provider processes it to return the result, under its own privacy policy.
  • Our hosting provider may keep standard technical request logs (such as time and IP address) for security and operations.

If you open the detailed translation page, the app loads the Google Translate or Yandex Translate website with the selected text. That website, its cookies and its own policy apply on that page.

Analytics and crash reports

To understand how the app is used and to fix problems, Transsera uses Google Firebase:

  • Firebase Analytics collects usage events and device information: app version, iOS version, device model, language, country derived from your IP address, sessions, and automatically collected events such as first launch and screen activity. The app also records an event when you translate subtitles, including the translator and the language pair, but not the text. Firebase identifies the installation with a random app instance ID. Transsera does not request ad tracking permission, so the advertising identifier (IDFA) is not used.
  • Firebase Crashlytics collects crash reports: the stack trace, device model, iOS version, app version and the state of the app when it crashed. Crash reports are tied to a random installation identifier.

This data is not linked to your Coursera account, your name or your email address, and we don't use it for advertising. It is processed by Google as our service provider.

You can turn this off at any time in Options → Privacy → Share Analytics & Crash Reports. When you turn it off, analytics collection stops immediately and the app instance ID is reset. Crash reporting stops after the app restarts.

Purchases

In-app purchases are processed by Apple through the App Store. We don't receive your payment details, name or Apple ID. The app stores receipts of your purchases on your device to unlock features and to restore them.

Third-party services

The app relies on these services. Each processes data under its own policy:

ServicePurposeData
CourseraSign-in, courses, videos, progressYour Coursera account and learning data, exchanged directly between your device and Coursera
Google Translate / Yandex TranslateTranslationSelected subtitle text and language pair
Google CloudHosting of our translation serviceTranslation requests, technical request logs
Google FirebaseAnalytics and crash reportingUsage events, device information, crash reports
AppleApp Store purchases, update and rating checksPurchase transactions; the app ID when checking for a new version
GitHub PagesHosting of this websiteVisitors' IP addresses, logged by GitHub for security

Some Coursera pages shown in the app, such as quizzes, load common open-source libraries (for example jQuery, Bootstrap and MathJax) from public content delivery networks. These networks receive standard request information such as your IP address.

These providers may process information in countries outside the country where you live, including the United States. Their linked privacy notices describe their processing locations and international transfer arrangements.

What we don't do

  • We don't sell or rent your data.
  • We don't show ads or share data with advertisers.
  • We don't build profiles of you or combine app data with other sources.

We may disclose information if required by law, or if needed to protect the rights, property or safety of our users or others.

Retention and deletion

  • On your device: downloaded lectures can be removed in the app. Cached courses, playback history and downloads may remain after sign-out; deleting the app removes its local files. Keychain items and device backups are subject to the exceptions described above.
  • Analytics: our retention settings are 2 months for event data and 14 months for user data. Each new user activity resets the user-data retention period, so user data may be retained for longer than 14 months from the first activity. This reset does not extend the retention period for individual events. Google deletes eligible data on a monthly schedule, so deletion is not immediate when a retention period ends. Standard aggregated reports are not subject to these retention periods and may remain available for longer. See Google's retention documentation.
  • Crash reports: Firebase Crashlytics retains crash reports and associated identifiers for 90 days before starting to remove them from its live and backup systems. See Firebase's retention information.
  • Translation text: not stored by us.

Analytics and crash data use random installation identifiers rather than your name or email, so we cannot locate your records using your name or email alone. Turning off sharing in Options stops future collection as described above; it does not itself delete reports already sent. Existing data follows the retention and deletion processes described here. You can also contact us with a deletion request, and we will assess what data we can identify and delete.

Your choices and rights

  • Withdraw consent to analytics: Options → Privacy → Share Analytics & Crash Reports.
  • Remove your Coursera session: Options → Logout.
  • Delete downloaded lectures: in the course's list of lectures, or by deleting the app.
  • Manage your Coursera data: through your Coursera account, under Coursera's privacy policy.

Depending on where you live and the processing involved, you may have rights to access, correct or delete your personal data, restrict or object to processing, and receive a portable copy of your data. Where processing relies on your consent, you may withdraw it. You may also complain to your local data protection authority. To exercise your rights, email us at the address below. We will respond within one month, or within any shorter period required by applicable law. If the law permits an extension, we will tell you within that initial period and explain why.

Children

Transsera is not directed at children under 16. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information through the app, contact us and we will help remove it.

Security

Session data is stored using iOS system storage, including the Keychain. Network requests use HTTPS. No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, but we take reasonable measures to protect your information.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy when the app changes. We'll post the new version on this page and update the date at the top. For significant changes we'll also let you know in the app.
